French Press Coffee: Traditional vs Travel Mugs – Product Reviews

French press coffee is popular all over the world. There is no question about it. There are many reasons why people love the French press. One of the many reasons is the quality of the coffee. One of the reasons why I love a French press is its simplicity. I like to be able to make a coffee without needing a machine, filters, cables, etc. A french press is a simple device that makes your coffee and goes away without taking up space on your counter.

So lets talk about the different types of French press out there and the ones that I really like and use regularly.

IKEA UPPHETTA French Press

The most common French press out there is the traditional glass or metal beaker with a plunger like insert. These are the most common French Press that you’ll see pretty much anywhere. They range in quality, material, and price. Ikea has one that is quite inexpensive at about $8. It has a four-and-a-half star rating with over 1000 reviews. So I decided to give it a try and I have to say that I’m very impressed with the quality of the French press.

I purchased the two cup French press and since I am the only one in my household that drinks coffee its more than I need. I have had it for a few years now and its quite durable and still quite new.

Like any French Press the Ikea UPPHETTA doubles as a milk frother. Simply heat up a cup of milk, pour into the french press and raise and lower the plunger until the milk froths.

 Pros:

 Inexpensive

 simple to use

 great reviews

 makes great coffee

Cons:

A bit too large although they do sell a single cup version

Clean up as a little bit tedious

Overall it’s a great French press for a great price.  I highly recommend it for anyone interested in making a great cup of top quality french press coffee.

Presse by Bobble French Press

So if I like the Ikea French Press so much why did I go ahead and get the Presss by Bobble? Well for starters as I mentioned in my previous paragraphs that I don’t like to have many components when dealing with making coffee. One of the reasons why I got a French press in the first place was that I wanted the simplicity of not having a machine that takes up counter space, needs to be plugged in and uses large paper filters etc. Now, the main reason why I wanted the Presse by Bobble is because it’s a French press and a mug in one with fewer components to worry about and wash. With the Press by Bobble I only need to clean one thing.

The Press by Bobble is fairly large and wide. It is a stainless steel double insulated mug with a rubber top. The internal plunger and micro mesh filter are also made of stainless steel. This French Press mug will keep your coffee piping hot. If you like hot coffee and you want a travel French press then this mug is for you.

The Presse by Bobble has a 4.6 star rating with close to 900 reviews on Amazon.

Pros:

One device to make and carry your coffee

Great tasting coffee

Many positive reviews on amazon and youtube

Keeps your coffee hot

Cons:

Can be a bit tedious to clean as you need to remove the mesh filter, rubber gasket etc

Fairly wide and does not fit in a standard cup holder.

A bit annoying drinking from a rubber lid

Zyliss Smart Cafe Travel Mug

The Zyliss French press mug is my preferred mug. In fact, when I first started looking for a French press mug this was exactly what I was interested in getting except that I didnt know it existed until after I bought the Presse by Bobble. Unlike the other two items previously discussed, this mug really has two components: the mug itself and the plunger with an attached mesh filter. Clean up is super easy as there really is much to do aside from pouring out the coffee grounds and rinsing out the mug. Nothing to dismantle.

Just like the Presse by Bobble, the Zyliss is double insulated. But unlike the Presse it is made out of plastic.

I have to add that one of the main complaints with this mug is that because there is a hole in the side of the plunger coffee grounds pour into the coffee when the plunger is pushed down. This is indeed an issue but one that could easily be resolved. One way to solve this is by tilting the mug slightly while pushing down the plunger very slowly. By tilting the mug the coffee grounds float to the other side and dont flow in through the hole.

The other issue I have with the mug is that it is quite wide and like the Press by babul doesn’t fit easily in a standard cup holder in a car or van.

I really love this mug and the coffee tastes amazing. I highly recommend it.

The Zyliss has a 4.4 star rating and over 1000 reviews.

Pros:

Very easy to clean

Significantly lighter than the Presse by Bobble as its made of plastic instead of metal.

Fewer parts

Cons:

Very wide mug to big to fit in a standard cup holder

Coffee grounds flow into mug sometimes when pushing the plunger down

Doesnt hold as much coffee as the Presse

All three are great French press options. If more than one person in your family likes coffee then the Ikea UPPHETTA is the best option. For a travel mug, if you like your coffee really hot and you want more than a standard cup size the Presse by Bobble is a great choice. On the other hand, if you want a simpler French Press mug, with fewer parts, that easy to clean the Zyliss is the best choice.
